WHY EXFOLIATION IS IMPORTANT
Not only is our skin the largest organ of the body, it is a vital part of the excretory system removing waste from the body. Skin cells are constantly being regenerated approximately
every 27 days! Not only does it protect us from the harsh environment, it also makes us waterproof!
As this regeneration process happens, new cells push the old cells out to the surface and naturally slough off. Sometimes this process is very slow due to the glue like substance holding our cells together leaving our skin looking dull or flaky. Exfoliation helps move this process along. There are two types of exfoliation.
1. Mechanical Exfoliation:
This is the act of physically applying pressure to your skin using abrasives such as body scrubs, salt glows, rough gloves or cloths, microderm abrasion brushes or even coffee grounds. Avoid things like seed pits as they can be sharp and microscopically scratch the skin. Tresor Rare has a great, creamy exfoliator great for everyday use.
2. Chemical Exfoliation:
Chemicals such as Alphahydroxy Acids, Enzymes or facial
peels are usually gel like substances that loosen this “glue” that hold the dead cells in place. These chemicals can be mild to very aggressive depending on the strength and concentration. Some peels like this one from Tresor Rare use natural enzymes that soften the dead skin and roll it away!
Benefits of exfoliation:
- Allows better penetration of serums and creams.
- Stimulates blood flow
- Aids and speeds toxin removal
- Breaks down cellulite
- Lessens wrinkles
- Tones muscles adding a more youthful appearance
- Stimulates natural oil production
- Helps lessen ingrown hairs
Here are a few tips to remember about exfoliation.
- You only need the pressure of the weight of a nickle applied to exfoliate. Our skin ranges from .20mm on our face to 4mm in places like the hands and feet. Harsh exfoliation can cause broken capillaries, over stimulation of oil production and callousing.
- Mild exfoliation should be done no more that once a week.
- ALWAYS follow up with a serum and/or moisturizer to replace natural oils and re hydrate the skin.
- Smile. It tightens the muscles, stimulates circulation and releases feel good hormones.
FAQ’s about exfoliation:
I don’t like to exfoliate, it makes me break out!
You may need a different type of exfoliate. You are removing the dead layers of skin and where you once had clogged pores, you may notice those bumps coming to a small white head and then quickly disappearing without redness, soreness, or inflammation. “Purging” usually lasts up to 6 weeks while the skin is regenerating itself. Always make sure your hands, cloths or brushes are clean and free of bacteria. This can be detrimental to that fresh new skin.
Exfoliation dries out my skin.
ALWAYS follow up with a serum or moisturizer since you are removing the dry top layers. You may need a heavier moisturizer. You could be exfoliating too often or too rough.
Is that my dead skin coming off with the Peeling Gel?
No. The gel is a mild exfoliate that help loosen the “glue” that binds the dead skin cells to the surface. As the gel dries, it attaches to the dead cells rolling them off in a peeling effect.
